CCSS: Creative, Competent, Social Students

I teach biology, but teach little about living.


You do not need to know anything about mitosis to know how to live.
You do not need to know anything about how to live to learn mitosis.

Too many of us strive to do whatever it is we must do without a thought to why we do anything the way we do it.

It's not learning that matters, it's living. Learning is an evolutionary tool shared by a lot of species better at this living thing than the current version of H. sapiens. Animals who choose to ignore the world around them do not last very long. Humans are no exception.

We have fetishized education as some sort of independent structure, institutionalizing what we think matters without thinking about what actually does matter. Why else care who graduated from where, or class ranks, or SAT scores?

Why do we let a few strangers dictate a "common core" defining what should be learned?

Here's my CCSS--we need to foster competent, creative, and social students. It's not my place (or anyone else's) to dictate a child's life path, but if we must have common standards, here are a few I think are worth sharing:


  • Students should know what's edible in their area, and how to prepare it. Around here it could be wild cherries, dandelions, squirrel, deer, clams, or hundreds of other fine food sources. Not saying they need to forage like Wildman Steve Brill, but using primary sources for food ought to be at least as important as using primary sources for some term paper no one will read besides a teacher.

  • Students should know the basics of their dwellings, and be able to use truly digital tools like hammers, screwdrivers, and saws to make and repair the things we need within our dwellings. Knowing how to approach a simple plumbing problem (or any mechanical problem) matters more than knowing how to "apply the Binomial Theorem."

  • Students should know what they need to stay alive, what goes into them (and where it came from) and what goes out of them (and where it goes). If they don't know this, they literally don't know shit. 
  • Arne and his pals would like your children to Serve Man....
    Our economy depends on sustaining learned helplessness; our current way of schooling does just that.

    Our children need to learn to read, to write, to develop reasonable number sense, and to solve problems. They need a reasonable sense of what's real (and what's not), and a reasonable chance to live a happy and productive life.



    They also need to live as the animals that they are.


    Whose stories are we teaching?


    For part of  chilly February afternoon, a chunk of the frozen bay perilously perched itself by the edge of the sea.

    It held my attention, this lifeless form, a half ton of water balancing on a small pedestal.

    Our minds create stories upon stories, stories that help us survive, help us live, but stories are just that, and the intensity of my interest at this random block of broken berg makes little sense.

    Rationally, I know that this is just chunks of ice from the fresh Delaware River above, coalescing from the forces of the tides, but it became my altar of unhewn stone, an evanescent idol.

    We worship patterns, and see gods where none exist, but our stories have been, until now, based on the larger world around us.

    We let others manipulate us and our children, replacing our stories of nature with the stories of the abstract, of global economies, of currencies, of hubris. We encourage our children to play with the screens that distort and manipulate our view of the world.




    And then we wonder what's wrong with them.....

    The anger, the sadness, the tears of students are real.
    It's been a long February, but it's more than that.

    I spent some time yesterday gazing at a colony of daphnia dancing among the elodea in the last hour of sunlight angling through the glass world they live in. Bubbles of oxygen streamed up from the plants, bubbles made up of broken water molecules, slashed by the sun's energy, now used by the same daphnia as they go about doing whatever daphnia do.

    Eat, rest, move, have sex, make more daphnia, and sometimes (so it seems) doing nothing at all.

    I don't do much for the daphnia--just add a little bit of water to the container now and again. I do not know where they came from, and if I were not a modern sort, they'd be enough evidence to persuade me that spontaneous generation is real.

    Been an interesting couple of months, reminders of my mortality marked by a heart that beats to its own drummer, and I am no longer so blasé about the tears of the young ones in front of me. I am part of a system that is breaking the kids.

    I put no pressure on my daphnia, who dance the day away. They already know how to live.

    I put too much pressure on my lambs, who no longer see the daphnia, and would find it strange to see an older man spend so much time staring at a watery world on  a windowsill.



    Too few of us know what matters, yet we insist on dictating to young humans just that.

    The connected child

    An essential quality of technology, from the spear to Skype, is action at a distance. Technology enables us to have an effect on people and things far away. In general, the more advanced the technology, the further away it is able to impose an effect. 


    Our lives cost the lives of others. That's always been true, and will be so long as we breathe. Technology allows us to forget this.

    As technophiles spew on about a global community, where your value is measured by the number of hits your words register, their hands never touch the blood and feces of the life around them.

    You want every child "connected"? So do I. It's what's at the other end of the connection that matters.

    All children, every child, should know where the stuff that makes up their bodies comes from, all the way back to the living organisms that fill up, unrecognizable, wrapped in plastic.


    All children, every child, should know where their waste goes, through hidden pipes and trucks that rumble before dawn through the neighborhood once or twice a week.

    We can do both, I suppose--just make sure you cover up the machines when I bring in a calf (or whatever the cafeteria is serving this week) to slaughter in the classroom.


    I could live without my computer a lot easier than living without my knife.

    I peel garlic almost nightly. 
    It's a ritual. I step outside, and in the dark wintry months, look up at the stars. I am usually barefoot, even in the snow.

    It matters to me enough that I've done it for years, and hope to do so until the senses dull too much for it to matter anymore.

    The  garlic cloves yield their dry coats under my probing thumbs. I watch the husks slide east with the wind on good days, south on the stormy ones.
    Sometimes I think about the garlic, where it came from, where it will be in a few days.
    Sometimes I think about time, or seasons, or matter, or some other abstraction that counters the firm life in my hands.
    Mostly I think of nothing--I have a task, a good one, and I concentrate on the task at hand.
    The heft of a garlic bulb comes from the union of carbon dioxide and water, the electrons in its sugars stressed enough to release considerable free energy when returned to their native states.

    Of all the organisms on this planet, humans are the only ones who burn other organisms simply for this free energy.

    It may be wood, it may be peat, it may be wood, it may be gasoline.
    In all cases, we are using up what once was food to release a power no other animal knows.


    Everything that burns easily in my classroom owes its combustibility to a plant that captured sunlight, either in my lifetime or eons ago.

    Wool, paper, plastic, rayon, cotton--all with electrons trapped in stressed positions, ready to tumble into the welcome arms of oxygen, releasing their stress in a blaze of light and heat.

    Garlic burns, too, but we will eat these cloves tonight, their warmth felt three times--once from the work of chopping, once from the reassuring heat on the tongue and throat, and finally in the heat that radiates from my skin, up to wherever through the thin skin of a dry January evening atmosphere.

    I could burn the skins, too, I suppose, but I let them drift to the ground, to feed creatures I cannot even imagine, with stuff put together by the sun, which I can.

    We are living on the sustained efforts of other organisms, efforts that have accumulated over years, over eons.

    Oil, coal, peat, and wood all take time, and work. The energy released when we burn any of these is not inconsequential--we have become gods.


    When I was born, there were less than half the humans on Earth as there are now. We are consuming millions of years of free energy captured by plants like a plague of locusts, with similar consequences.

    When we lose our connection to our relationships with the rest of the sphere of living things, when we consume others for anything other than food and shelter, when we fall out of the cycle of life, we lose our religion

    Wandering out in the mid-January darkness to peel garlic is a small way to recapture it.



    Digital natives are neither

    I can drive a car reasonably well. I know its basic functions, can dive under its hood with a reasonable idea of what does what (and even fix things occasionally), and I'm cognizant of what a car can (and cannot) do.

    I grew up with cars, they were around long before I was born. I am an automotive native.

    Still, when faced with driving a new model, I invariably struggle to find the defrost function. I stil struggle with it in our latest car, and we've had it for over two years. No one worries about this, though, because we are all automobile natives, and we all know that I can figure this out on my own.

    Henry Ford was not an automotive native. Neither were the many, many folks who drove his Model T's, cantankerous beasts that needed a lot of loving and logic to keep chugging along. Chokes needed pulling, engines needed cranking, and tires (over and over again) needed replacing.

    Yet just about anyone who owned a Model T could finagle their way through the myriad maddening Model T problems.

    Not because they were natives, but because they were problem-solvers.

    Maybe the myth that a child can figure out a piece of software faster than her teacher says more about the teacher than the child.

    Commercial software is made to be sold. "Intuitive" software sells better than clunky code, and pretty much all commercial programs and hardware meant for mass consumption start up in similar ways.

    There is nothing amazing about a reasonably bright child picking up a device and figuring how to power it up, no more than a reasonably bright teacher starting and driving a car they've never used before. Praising your two year old using an iPad is like praising him for pooping in a toilet. I'm all for praising toddlers. But pooping and iPadding are both "user friendly" activities.

    Problem solving is a an old, generic skill,  It requires reasoning, experimenting, patience, and (in some cases) chutzpah. Humans are (generally) pretty good at it.

    Let's not fetishize the machine, nor the child's relationship to it.
    Crows can solve problems. Humans can, too.

    We should be able to do it better.



    My Dad would say that you should not use a machine until you know how it worked.

    Crocuses, again


    The crocuses are back, spearing their way through last summer's leaves, reminding me (again) that spring is possible.

    I lose faith when I lose my way, when I no longer feel the rhythms of the natural world in my bones, when I spend more time under fluorescent light than I do under the sun.

    We pretend that we can educate children for a global village, with standards and standardization, through prescribed algorithms. We forget that the lamb in front of us will age, will die, just as we will age, will die.

    And in a hundred years, the crocuses will again break through the frozen ground, as alive as you and I are alive today, with as much purpose.

    If you do not know what our purpose is for being here, and it is unlikely that you do, then why do you impose the will of strangers on the children in your community?



    I think we all need to spend a day just silently watching the sun wend its way across the sky.




    The carrot and stick approach


    With all the confusion of what constitutes good teaching in a classroom these days, complicated by metrics that have little to do with anything, I have learned through the years that the carrot and stick approach works best.

    Each year we get one or two, grown by patient students who see to it that their little plant survives these dark wintry months.

    And here's the stick:


    My Dad's slide rule sits on my desk. Any student can play with it anytime, and they do. It does what it's supposed to do, and continues to do it well, well over 50 years later.

    There's joy in a tool that works well in the hands that know it.
    Not sure the kids see the joy in the tool, but they recognize the joy in me every time I pick it up.



    Some days I think a kid getting the chance to see a happy adult is reason enough for me to be there.

    Biology only matters if life does....


    I suppose it's a bit much to ask students to ponder their closeness to plants in a culture where human tribes can barely recognize their similarities with other tribes. Things have broken down.

    But I am going to ask you, gentle reader.
    • We share the same genetic code--we can make their stuff, they can make ours.
    • We both reproduce sexually in a spectacular dance of the chromosomes, mixing us up every generation, so that even the perfect among us are so for only a generation.
    • We both rely on ribosomes to build our proteins, microtubules and mitochondria to get us through the day, and an innate will to do whatever we need to see the next sunrise.
    Humans and basil share a common ancestor. We share a quarter of the same genes. Many of our proteins do exactly the same thing, others not so much.

    But we're pretty damn close at the most basic levels of life. Which is pretty cool.

    We're even closer to insects--heck, we're both even animals! We share about 60% of our core genes with fruit flies. 

    If something effectively kills plants or insects, and you see no connections between plants and insects and humans, then you likely do not contemplate the tons and tons and tons of herbicides and pesticides poured on our food in our "war" against weeds and weevils.



    If you don't contemplate about food or water or folks in your neighborhood, it's unlikely you contemplate much about anything that matters.

    Just a stone's throw away

    In the span of less than a week, I managed to land in a cardiac unit and lose a friend.
    It is one thing to write of mortality, quite another to kiss its cheek.
    I am in the land of the fine again, but we all are dancing in the same shadow.

    A St. Stephen's Day Story


    My great grandfather was a bricklayer at a time when New York City, just a sail away, was laying a lot of bricks. He'd come to the States, ply his trade, then return to the island.

    In New York City there are many magnificent buildings erected on the backs of those who traveled from home, because they had to, and I am sure many families in the area claim a particular building (or two) as their own.

    To whom does a garden belong? The gardener who digs into the rich bed of life, or the rich man who pays for his gardener's services? And so it is with the Flatiron Building in New York City. It is as much ours as anyone with a legal claim to the deed.

    I can only imagine the thoughts running through a man far younger than myself as he tumbled several stories to the street below in a city far from his home. I can only imagine the pain and fear as he was carted off to a hospital, at a time when no one expected a man to survive a fall like that.

    I do not have to imagine, though, that he prayed.
    I have little doubt that in his prayers, after, of course Jesus and Mary, he prayed to St. Stephen.

    St. Stephen was stoned to death for a few reasons, but clearly he agitated those in power with his belief that  "the most High dwells not in temples made with hands." He is the patron saint of bricklayers, which would be ironic in most cultures.

    So today is a good reminder to me to remember a few things that matter:
    • We are here by the tenuous thread we call the Grace of God.
    • Though our individual threads will break, we are all part of a larger, living tapestry.
    • Spills, even bad ones, can end well.
    • We revere the temples of learning at our peril.



    I am the same man;
    I will not be the same teacher.

    Undeniable: Bill Nye is wrong

    Fundamentalists are not killing the minds of our children. Our disconnect from what's real is.

    Fundamentalism is a sadly predictable result of a people who have as much to gain by paying attention to the dope on screens as they do to the dope proselytizing in a classroom. If you think you can reduce evolution to a two minute discussion using Emojis and cute music, you're just adding to the noise.

    If I tell a child that unicorns and leprechauns are imaginary, and double wattle cassowaries are "real," and can do no better than provide a projected image on a classroom screen as I pontificate the difference between what's real and what's not, well, who's the idiot?

    Children would question just about everything we teach (at least the way we teach now) if children had something, anything, to center themselves.

    Start with the local, with a bug or a plant or a bird or anything real that exists outside a screen. Until that local reality becomes more real than the stream of images and sounds we feed our children, we get the culture we deserve.

    I bet I could convince a child that Mr. Nye is a robot.




    His overall point is valid--kids need to be able to question things, to think, to be skeptical, in order to learn about nature.




    Going for the gold


    Wheat, despite what we believe, is made mostly of air, not earth, and will always be, no matter what we think. We can live out our lives in ignorance, convinced we are right, and wheat plants will not change, spinning air into sugar, a greater gift than Rumpelstiltskin's skill with straw. Grace.


    The value of gold is a human conceit. An ounce will get you $1200 today, an abstract string of symbols that can be traded for over 5 metric tons of wheat berries, almost 200 bushels of wheat, about 8000 loaves, a loaf a day for over two decades, enough to get me well into my eighth decade, should I live so long. Greed.

    The wheat is dying now, because the light is dying.
    The light will return, as will the wheat.
    And many of us will die before then, working for our Rumpelstiltskin masters, when all we had to do was just step outside.


    And yet we teach our children to value metal over life.

    Go ahead, prepare your children for college, for careers, for a life dependent (or so they think) on the spot price of a troy ounce of gold on the market. I'll find my gold in the light reflecting off the dying plants of autumn.

    While sharing pints with a few teachers upstairs at McGinty's,
    Chris Harbeck took a sip of Guinness, then tossed out a few words that changed my teaching--
    "I give out points for anything, a thousand here, a thousand there. They don't mean anything."

    We train kids to fear mistakes.

    That's not always a bad thing--I just spent the better part of this glorious fall weekend breaking a pipe that required cutting a hole in the wall because I have more confidence than skills, and may need to call a plumber to fix what I broke.

    Still, I learned a lot about plumbing and 1908 pipe threads--things were not quite as standardized then--and I have to admit, I enjoyed solving the many problems that popped up along the way. Even if this project ends up an utter disaster, I had fun along the way, satisfying some evolutionary trait that kept my lineage around for over three billion years.

    (I am convinced that "fun" is pretty much always an evolutionary artifact.)

    School is not fun; making too many mistakes gets you labeled as that kid, and too many teachers say that those kid will end up broke, homeless, and hungry unless we teach them to make fewer mistakes.

    We fuck them up even more with the religion of ranking.
    Many of my "top-ranked" lambs are my most timid.
    So I worked on fixing this.

    Here's one of my ideas that seems to have worked:


    We have a class Errorometer Board. Each time someone makes a good mistake--and there are all kinds of errors that fall in this category--we add a point. For every 10 points, everybody in class gets bonus points factored into their grades, as real as any other points "earned."

    Yes, some wackadoodle well versed in the school game will then say something deliberately wrong to earn points, and I explain why saying something deliberately wrong does not count. We're not about the school game, we're about learning.

    Even after the novelty wears off, the kids keep track of the Errorometer--they will spontaneously evaluate whether a mistake has earned a point.  I also toss in points for great, unexpected right answers.



    Chris Harbeck is right, the points mean nothing. I finally found a way to make them useful.

    Dear (White) Teachers

    I did not know that Michael Brown.
    Chances are pretty good you did not either.
    But the name evokes strong emotions.

    His color evokes strong responses.
    Ferguson's description as an "inner-ring suburb" with a "somewhat transient" black population allows readers to quietly judge a town they never knew existed until the past week--ah, but it's OK, we know that kind of town, and those kind of people.

    His size evokes adrenaline.
    But you rarely read that Michael Brown was a "large man" without "black" slipped in as well.

    Well, the rational abstract mind points out, those are descriptors, nothing more.
    Yet we hear it over and over again--because it is effective, over and over again.

    Every time you read it, your amygdala, the wordless part of your brain, flashes raw fear and anger.
    We read the news to fire that amygdala, to feel like we're part of something, to feel like we're part of anything.




    Michael Brown's killing was a public act by a public official working under the authority of a publicly-run department in a public space. Please read that carefully.

    If you have been paying attention, you are not surprised. 
    Eric Garner. 
    John Crawford. 
    Ezell Ford. 
    Dante Parker.
    All less than a month ago.
    And yet we will act shocked when the next name rolls through our newsfeed.

    Those of us who teach in public schools, who earn our living using public dollars, are obligated as civil servants, and more importantly, as human beings, to carry the discussion of what it means to be public. For us to be people.

    I teach young adults in a public space. Their space. My space. Our space.
    Race has been criminalized in our public spaces.
    Has been for a long, long time.
    That's our problem.

    I have long lost hope that I can much change private discourse of folks of privilege, though I bark enough that some conversations get shorted when I'm around. But silencing private conversations will not change a damn thing, despite the ooh-goody-goody dopamine dose of self-righteousness you might feel.

    Let's talk about our roles as public teachers in public spaces publicly.
    Let's remind our students (and ourselves) that the public belongs to all of us.
    Let's remember that abstractions, as powerful as they are, are not real.

    I'm not looking for a Kumbaya fest--if you're all about the neurochemical surges of joy, we got Xanax for that. No, it's time we dug into that amygdala and stare at the beast that makes us who we are.




    And really, you need to stop asking POC what "they" think.
